(OVERVIEW)

This project focused on developing a comprehensive visual style guide for NACCHO’s Project Firstline initiative to support the creation of consistent and cohesive campaign materials. The National Association of County and City Health Officials works to strengthen local health departments across the United States, and this initiative required a clear and accessible design system to improve communication and training resources for public health professionals. The style guide was designed to serve as a foundational tool that would unify future materials while enhancing clarity, engagement and usability across the program.

(THE CHALLENGE)

The challenge was to create a flexible yet structured visual system that could be easily applied by NACCHO team members with varying levels of design experience. Project Firstline required materials that could communicate complex public health information in a way that felt approachable, engaging and easy to understand. At the same time, the style guide needed to ensure consistency across a wide range of future applications while maintaining the integrity and credibility of a national public health organization.

(OUR APPROACH)

The approach centered on building a human centered design system anchored in hand drawn illustration and iconography. By incorporating custom drawn visual elements, the system introduced warmth, personality and clarity into otherwise complex educational content. These illustrations were intentionally crafted to simplify information while strengthening emotional connection with the audience. The style guide itself was designed to be straightforward and practical, providing clear direction on how to apply the visual system across future materials while maintaining accessibility for non designers.

(RESULTS & IMPACT)

The final style guide provided NACCHO with a cohesive and scalable foundation for Project Firstline campaign materials, ensuring visual consistency across future communications and training resources. The introduction of hand drawn elements helped humanize public health messaging, making complex concepts more approachable and engaging for healthcare workers and local health departments. This system strengthened NACCHO’s ability to communicate effectively at scale while reinforcing trust, clarity and accessibility in its educational outreach.
